Short term respite (STR)

What is Short-Term Respite?

Short-Term Respite (STR), previously referred to as Short-Term Accommodation (STA), is an NDIS support that provides temporary care and accommodation for participants outside of their usual home environment.

STR gives participants the opportunity to enjoy new experiences, build independence, and engage with others in a supportive setting, while also allowing families and carers to take a short break from their caring responsibilities. Support can be provided for overnight stays, weekends, or planned short-term visits depending on individual goals, support needs, and NDIS funding.

How STR can help?

STR supports may include assistance with:

• Personal care and daily routines • Meal preparation and support with meals • Medication assistance and reminders • Overnight care and supervision if required • Community participation and social activities

• Building independence and life skills • Developing confidence and social connections • Providing carers and families with temporary support relief

Who STR is suitable for?

STR may be suitable for people who:

• Require temporary support away from home • Would benefit from social interaction and new experiences • Need support while informal carers are unavailable • Want to build confidence and independence in a supported environment • Require short-term accommodation with daily assistance

Building Independence Through STR

STR is designed to support participants in developing everyday living skills while enjoying a safe and supportive environment. Participants are encouraged to take part in daily activities, community outings, and social opportunities that promote independence, wellbeing, and confidence.

Support workers work alongside participants to encourage choice, personal growth, and meaningful participation in everyday life.

Flexible Support Options

STR can be delivered in a range of accommodation settings depending on the participant’s needs and preferences, including:

• Shared respite accommodation • Individual support arrangements • Community-based accommodation options • Supported short-term stays

The most suitable arrangement will depend on the participant’s goals, support requirements, and preferred living environment during their stay.

Important information about STR funding

NDIS funding for STR generally includes support services, accommodation, meals, and personal care provided during the stay. Funding availability and duration will depend on individual NDIS plans and assessed support needs.

STR funding does not usually cover:

• General holiday or travel costs unrelated to disability support • Personal spending money

• Additional entertainment expenses • Everyday living expenses outside of the respite stay

All supports must align with NDIS reasonable and necessary funding criteria and participant goals.

Finding the right support

Choosing the right STR provider is an important part of ensuring a safe, comfortable, and positive experience. Support coordinators, carers, families, and allied health professionals can assist participants in exploring STR options that best suit their individual needs, goals, and preferences.

Having a short stay out of home to try new things, make new friends or develop new skills.

N

Temporary periods of extra personal supports so that the participant can remain at home when families and/or carers are not available

For carers, taking some time off can help them better manage their own health and improve their wellbeing.

And sometimes the unexpected happens. You may have an unexpected change in your circumstance your carer needs respite and or is temporarily unable to look after you. During those times, it is important to have access to safe accommodation where you receive the care you need.
