Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA)

What is Medium-Term Accommodation?

Medium-Term Accommodation (MTA) is an NDIS support that provides temporary accommodation for participants who are waiting for their long-term housing solution to become available. Reasons may include waiting for home modifications to be completed, Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), Supported Independent Living (SIL), or other permanent housing arrangements.

MTA provides participants with a safe and supportive place to stay while ensuring continuity of care and daily support during transition periods. Accommodation can be provided for a limited period based on individual circumstances, goals, and approved NDIS funding.

Flexible accommodation options:

MTA can be provided in a variety of accommodation settings depending on the participant’s needs, preferences, and support requirements, including:

• Shared accommodation arrangements • Individual accommodation options • Community-based housing settings • Supported transitional accommodation

The most appropriate arrangement will depend on the participant’s goals, support needs, and future housing plans.

Who MTA is suitable for?

MTA may be suitable for people who:

• Whilst waiting for long-term housing or disability accommodation • Require temporary housing due to home modifications or repairs • Need support during a transition between living arrangements • Require daily assistance while awaiting permanent accommodation • Would benefit from a stable and supportive temporary environment • Need accommodation while support arrangements are being finalised

MTA is designed to provide participants with stability and support during periods of change. Participants are encouraged to maintain daily routines, participate in community activities, and continue developing life skills while living in a supportive environment.

Support workers work alongside participants and their care team to encourage independence, choice, and meaningful participation in everyday life while preparing for long-term living arrangements.

Important information about MTA funding:

NDIS funding for MTA generally covers the cost of temporary accommodation for participants who are unable to remain in their usual home while waiting for long-term housing supports to become available.

Funding availability and duration will depend on individual NDIS plans and assessed support needs.

MTA funding does not usually cover:

• Permanent housing costs • Rent or mortgage expenses unrelated to approved supports • Personal spending money • Everyday living expenses not associated with disability support • Holiday or travel-related accommodation costs

All supports must align with NDIS reasonable and necessary funding criteria and participant goals.

Finding the right support:

Choosing the right MTA provider is important to ensure participants feel safe, supported, and comfortable during transitional periods. Support coordinators, families,

carers, and allied health professionals can assist participants in exploring accommodation options that best meet their individual needs and goals.
